Book Launch: Let Sleeping Dogs Lie with Janice Simpson

Come have a chat with Janice Simpson to celebrate the launch of her memoir, Let Sleeping Dogs Lie, on Sunday 5th February, 2pm at the Sun Theatre.

Janice Simpson

Let Sleeping Dogs Lie is a memoir framed by a bicycle trip I made from Paris to Istanbul. I left behind my husband, children, dogs and daily responsibilities. I went alone to Paris to meet up with forty people from around the globe who, with their superior skills, better equipment, thinner bodies and better riding preparation daunted me.

But the kilometres – all 4,000 of them – hummed by under my wheels as I spent time thinking, as well as conversing, laughing, performing and the more mundane activities associated with bicycle maintenance, camping, laundry and food.

I thought about my adoption as an infant and the subsequent rather strange relationship with my adoptive parents; my early marriage and violent divorce; the troubles of being a single parent; how I had gone in and out of relationships in an attempt to heal psychic loss; and more. I think these are universal themes in the lives of many women.

The story is narrated in the first person and weaves between the present and the past, Europe and Australia, and my life as daughter, mother and wife.

Oh, and the dogs in the title refer to the dogs I have left at home, the dogs I meet along the way and the sleeping dogs of my past, the ones my mother admonished me to let sleep.

All Welcome! This is a free event, but please RSVP here, call us on 9689 0661 or drop into the store.
